This is part of larger and ongoing work called, The Indians of Gunflint Lake
Across the Lake is a film and photo essay. For over a decade, this multigenerational research has delved into family photo albums, historical records and colonial archives to create a counter-narrative. Across the Lake is part film screening and part narrative lecture. The work presents questions of borders, Indigeneity, language, ecological heritage, colonialism, movement, and living between and across the colonial frame of citizenship and nation-state.
Materials: oral history, family photo albums, found photos, digitized 16-mm film and other archives of both published and unpublished materials, including manuscripts, newspapers, letters, turn of the century musical scores and choreographic notes, and the sonic equivalents of all of these things.
